The QI Book of Animal Ignorance is a selection of articles about creatures from Aardvark to Worm, which means the authors are applying the word ‘animal’ in it’s loosest sense. The book covers birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, arthropods and invertebrates as well as mammals and marsupials.
Unlike the various QI Books of xxxx Facts, this book is not made up of individual snippets of information. The short articles in the Book of Animal Ignorance tell you something about each creature’s biology. Most, if not all, will tell you something you didn’t know, even for familiar animals like cats and dogs that many of us encounter every day.
The anials covered in the Book of Animal Ignorance range from the familiar (including cow, horse, human) to the exotic (hummingbird, lion),, to the down-right bizarre (fossa, hoatzin). I found all the articles interesting and informative. I have just one question for the authors: Why stop at Worm? The only ‘X’ animal I could find was the X-ray Tetra, a small tropical fish that can be kept by aquarium owners. But was there really nothing interesting to say about Yaks, Zebras and Zebu?
